POEM
Hey Simi, What’s that Smell?
Copyright @ L. Isabelle Martel 2023
Beth cringes and speaks up
From the tallest tree top:
“Did I pull your finger?
So what is that stinker…
“That is stuck in my nose,
And won’t let me come close?”
Simi’s heard that before.
Who knows what she sprays for…
She’s quiet a minute.
And ponders a bit.
“There was a loud buzzing bee-
Then Miss Goose snuck up on me.
“My nerves on high alert
Shot my stinky squirt.
“Will this poor goose return?
Or just hide in the fern?
“Beth, how do you react,
When you feel attacked?”
Beth now dares to come closer,
And shares her answer:
“It’s my camouflage mode.
A chameleon’s code.
“Simi, when you go and hide,
Doesn’t it hurt your pride?
“You disappear in your vault.
It’s a defense, not your fault.
“Sure, it stinks for a while,
Stretches out for a mile,
“But it’s used to protect.
And it’s not a defect!”
Simi thinks a second.
“You’re quite right, I reckon.
“Beth, you’re really too kind.
A great friend, a sweet find!
“Now I’m done feeling shame.
So, let’s continue our game.”

Do you sometimes react too quickly?
Then you feel bad or guilty?
Do you find that when you stay calmer,
You tend to react better?
Why not count 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in your head.
Don’t react too quickly, pause first for a bit instead.
